A few weeks back, my friend Carles Novellas asked me if I’d like to contribute a half-hour mix to Radio Paralelo3, his Friday-night show on Spain’s Radio 3 (the same channel where Albert and I used to broadcast Lapsus Radio). The timing was perfect; I’d been gathering new tracks that I wanted to work into a set. So on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I dropped them onto a USB, plugged it into the CDJs, and banged out what turned out to be the best and most effortless mix I’ve made in ages.
Even though Carles only wanted 30 minutes, I recorded an hour (which, incidentally, is my wont as a writer as well: ask for 1,000 words and you’ll get 2,000—a trait that probably has not always endeared me to my editors). He ended up playing 40-45 minutes of it on his program last Friday, cutting out an extended ambient/downtempo intro that he reasoned might not fit the bill for a Saturday-night drive-time radio slot.
I’ve been meaning to use the newsletter as a platform to occasionally share my own mixes, so I’m sharing it here, exclusively for paying subscribers, with a private, downloadable SoundCloud link after the jump. (I hope you don’t think I’m overvaluing my skills as a DJ—you can also just look at as, Here’s a bunch of new music I think you’re really going to want to hear, and it just happens to be mixed together—quite effectively, if you ask me!)
The first 15 minutes are ambient, the rest is quite fleet—a mixture of deep house and techno, with touches of IDM. The through line is a supersaturated sense of color, along with a certain buoyancy, and a frictionless sense of glide. I’ve listened in the car, in the kitchen, and on the elliptical, and it sounds great in all three contexts. It’s all recent or upcoming music, along with one unreleased cut from the great funcionàrio. The tracklist includes cuts from Steve Hauschildt, Jeremy Hyman, Cousin & Priori, Cahl Sel, K-LONE, Efdemin, Shinichi Atobe, and more.
I’m juggling several major deadlines in the run-up to the holiday, so there won’t be a regular newsletter this week. I’ll be back next week, interviewing the founder of an experimental label doing mind-boggling things with the vinyl format, with a hefty roundup of new releases to follow that.
